What-A-Doll Quilts TM started out as a simple passion for quilt making, fashion
design, and doll making. Each unique design is the creation of Derri Lynn Sanchez, a self-
taught quilter who studied a little fashion design in college. Derri began creating "fashion
doll" themed quilts in the mid-1990's, while raising her two children. Her love for very
feminine and embellished fashion shows up in her creations.
"Aisha: The Modern African American Woman" became the first pattern Derri created,
and was copyrighted a few years later, in 1999. Aisha is wearing a tailored African print garb
with matching hat as were so popular in the early l990's. Her designs have gone on to
include a child version called "Child in the Doorway", now called "Child of Grace and Beauty",
featuring an adorable and elaborately dressed child who looks as if she is dressed for a very
special occasion.
Derri served as the Chairperson for the Onyx Quilt Club, in Tucson, Arizona for a 2-year
term, and taught a quilt workshop in her community. Derri has received recognition for her
work in a local paper, The Arizona Daily Star, and has exhibited her quilts in Tucson Meet
Yourself, an annual city fair. She had displayed her quilts at Northwest Center and other
community events as a local folk artist. Derri has made and sold quilts for friends and family
and now wants to make these patterns available to quilters and fabric artist and enthusiast.
Derri continues to create new designs centered around women's fashions, ethnic and period
themes.
